MacDonald Keys Engineers' Win

Schenectady Daily Gazette, October 20, 2004

BOSTON - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute scored five goals in the third period, including two on power plays by Kirk MacDonald, to defeat Northeastern, 7-4, in a non-conference hockey game Tuesday at Matthews Arena.

The 2-1-1 Engineers clinched the victory with a pair of emptynet goals by Kevin Croxton and Mark Yurkewicz after the Huskies had cut the deficit to 5-4 on goals by Mike Morris and Jason Guerriero.

RPI goalie Jordan Alford picked up his second victory of the season, making 29 saves.

Kani Gibson turned away 20 shots for the 1-3 Huskies.

Nick Economakos' second goal of the season staked the Engineers to a 1-0 lead just 1:06 into the game, and the Huskies failed to get on the scoreboard until Morris scored his first goal at 2:55 of the second period.

Freshman Andrew Lord's first goal of the season put RPI back on top, 2-1, going into the final period.

The teams combined for eight goals in the wild final period, when the Engineers pulled away despite being outshot by the Huskies, 17-9.

After Ray Ortiz knotted the score at 2-2 for Northeastern, MacDonald notched his third goal of the year to once again give the Engineers the lead.

Jonathan Ornalas collected his first goal of the season to push the Engineers' advantage to 4-2 before MacDonald's second goal of the game gave RPI even more breathing room.

RPI converted three of its seven power-play opportunities, while the Huskies were just 1-for-7.

The Engineers, who have now won two in a row, travel to Army Saturday.
